About KORUZA

A decade of building free-space optical links that survive the real world.

Why the platform exists

Developing free-space optical communication is traditionally a slow, high-effort process demanding expertise in optics, mechanics, electronics and software at once. Most teams start from scratch — building test setups, aligning optical paths by hand and debugging unstable links under time pressure.

We have spent over a decade developing and deploying KORUZA, through several generations of prototypes, field experiments, alignment work and industrial installations. The modular platform exists so that R&D teams, OEMs and startups can build, test and iterate without repeating that decade — and without the hard lessons that came with it.

A cross-disciplinary team covering optics, mechanics, electronics, embedded software and control algorithms, with full in-house prototyping infrastructure. KORUZA is developed and manufactured in Maribor, Slovenia.

Open by default

KORUZA began as an open-source, open-hardware project and the hardware, firmware and documentation remain published under open licences. That is unusual in this field, and deliberate: it means you can inspect what you are buying, modify it, and keep using your version indefinitely.

OEM licensing and co-development

KORUZA is available for OEM licensing and co-development. Most engagements start as a paid feasibility study, continue as an integration project, and move to pilot or production quantities from there.

At Productronica 2025 in Munich we ran a live demonstration of cable-free optical links for SMT pick-and-place machines — showing 10 Gb/s data transfer across a moving axis, replacing flex cables and slip rings that fail under repeated motion.
